Arts and Culture in Central City

Central City’s Artistic Flair

It’s no secret that Central City has casinos, but did you know that there is also a lively arts scene in this Colorado mountain town? With the fifth-oldest professional opera company in the nation, each year, hundreds of people flock to see the world-class productions performed during the annual opera festival. The Opera House is a beautiful piece of architecture and has perfect acoustics designed by Robert Roeschlaub. If you’re lucky enough to nab one of the 550 seats for a show during the opera season, you are in for a treat!

The Gilpin County Arts Association, located in Washington Hall, also rotates different exhibits year-round. The association represents local Rocky Mountain artists and always has something new for visitors to see.

The Central City Opera

The Central City Opera House is a beautifully preserved piece of Central City’s history. Founded in 1932, it is the fifth oldest professional opera company in the country. Each summer, the opera festival takes place, featuring several performances. Performers often stay in one of the 27 Victorian-era properties that the company owns and maintains. The Opera House itself was built in 1878. Hear from Eric Chinn, the Director of Historic Properties, in this short video. He describes what makes the Opera House and Central City so special.
